[LPC] Game Review: Concave

48 Liberated Pixel Cup Games? I’m reviewing them all.

Disclaimer: I’m competing in the cup, I’m not a judge!

Concave [Download me!][Google Code]

This is a Single Player Game, made in Python  / Pygame. Getting it to run on Fedora 17 was as simple as writing “python2.7 concave.py” from the uncompressed file.

This is a dungeon exploration game. It features random dungeon generation, which can lead to unlimited replayability. You start out as a generic character, and the game prompts you that you can move around using WASD keys, use E to talk with NPCs, as well as when stepping over the stairs, go to the floor above / below. You can use the I key to open your inventory, which you can use to customize your character with armor and weapons that boost different stats. You’re also equipped with 4 different magics: The first is a healing spell, the second is a fire lion, the third and fourth were a bit confusing, as all you see is a tornado. Placing your mouse over the spell will give you a hint: 3 is used to escape to the city once inside the dungeon. 4 takes you to the deepest dungeon you’ve explored so far .

The game features a shop where you can buy and sell items. The available items depend on your current level and often feature buffs + debuffs, allowing for more variety.

As for combat? You can use your mouse, and click in the direction you’d like to use your sword or dagger, but I found it highly ineffective. The Fire Lion spell on the other hand, inflicts burns to every single enemy, which allows you to burn them once and run away in circles while their health is slowly drained, and then just go and pick up the loot, warp back to town, sell & buy new stuff.

At level 5 and level 10, I encountered a huge enemy boss, which I quickly dispatched with Fire (and running away in circles!). The deeper you got into the dungeon, the more enemies the game would spawn, but even huge hordes of ~20 enemies coming at you at once in every direction were quickly dispatched with Fire & running.

The game features a game save mechanism, which lets you reload where you left off, or even start a new character. Since each level is randomly generated, you can set off and explore brand new dungeons every character you create!

Despite being quite easy and even a bit repetitive at times, I recommend you give this game a try, even if only to see the different types of enemies that were created using the LPC assets, as well as great looking, randomly generated dungeons.
