[LPC] Game Review: Neverwell Moor

Well, the Liberated Pixel Cup has ended. There are 48 games competing, and I’m taking my time reviewing them all.

A fair disclaimer: I’m also competing in the Cup. I’ll try to be unbiased though, judge for yourself and give the games a try!

Neverwell Moor [Play me!] [Download me!]

This is an HTML5 game. It’s very good-looking, I think it really highlights just how pretty the Liberated Pixel Cup Assets really are.

The game follows a super cute 15-year-old girl, Rachel, who lives in a magical island. You start out weaponless, against snakes, but you can quickly find a giant hammer to smack them. There are some simple quests you can do, like find a clock to give to a girl, and buy a book to give to your friend. I got stuck after that though, none of the characters on the screen seem to drop any hints, and after finding a secret passage and opening a chest full of coins, I don’t know where to go or what to do. I think the silver-haired girl is related to the next part, but all she says is ‘Hi’. :-/

One thing I did notice while walking through the island a hundred times, is that sometimes I would find a lot of coins scattered around. I would gladly pick them up without second thought. After playing for a while, I noticed that the snakes actually hurt the other kids, and eventually the kids died and dropped a lot of coins! This made me wonder if I could also hit the kids… and the answer is Yes! You can smack the neighbors with your hammer to get some extra coins. Don’t worry! They’ll respawn as soon as you enter a house :-)

As a side-note: I had previously played this game, and I was greatly surprised to see that the items and money I had loaded just as I had left the game.

Give this game a try, just mute the speakers, as the repetitive song really irked me after a very brief moment. If you do figure out how to go inside the huge light blue house, let me know, as I’m itching to find out more about the story!

There’s a hidden ending in the secret island. You just need to search for it there. I actually activated before taking the treasure…

Unfotunatly it does not work on an ipad. There is a notice about the browser not supporting ogg vorbis sound, and requests to press enter or space which I can’t as the on screen display does not show up. Will give it a try on another device…

@Simon The game was developed specifically for free software browsers. And well, iOS Mobile Safari isn’t one of those.

While I’m not *actively* working on the game at this time, I am continuing to support the game engine that I used to build it. When that’s in a state that I’m happy with, I do have a few planned features to implement (and bugs to fix) in the game. One such feature is mobile browser support using on-screen controls.
