Monday marked the end of Stargate: Universe, which lasted only 2 seasons. It also marks the end of Stargate, after a 17 year run.
Stargate SG-1 was the show that got me into Science Fiction. While I had previously read books like Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and watched movies like Star Wars, the concepts of space ships didn’t really appeal to me, at least until I watched SG-1.
What SG-1 had was more than Space ships, it had great humor, and the first few seasons, the only ones with space ships where the bad guys (Goa’uld). It took the humans about 7 seasons before they could build their own human-Asgard space ships, and by the time they had space battles, I was already in love with the show so much, it all felt natural.
After SG-1, I started watching other Sci-Fi shows like Firefly, Fringe, Doctor Who and I even watched the Star Trek movie that came out recently (But that’s all I’ve seen on the Star Trek side).
Stargate Universe being the last of the Stargate series marks the end of a great show, one that changed me from being interested in Fantasy (Think Hobbits and Elves), to being interested in Time Travel, Space Travel and Technology. To look into the future, rather than the past.
Thanks for the great run, Stargate. You will be missed.

That was really the end? That sucks. I mean we don’t even know what happens.. they just all magically get in the stasis chambers and um…. HELLO WE NEED A REAL ENDING, because that just kind of left out all of the “what actually happened at the end” stuff
(Although, to be fair, I thought SGU was a little lacking in originality… I couldn’t tell half the time if I was watching Star Trek: Voyager or Battlestar Galactica… so much of the plot / drama was similar.)
Oh, definitely, I disliked SG:U for half of season 1 and it felt completely different than SG-1/SG-A, and the BSG comparisons never stopped, but It still was its own show, with its own setting.
Syfy’s an idiot for canceling it, the ‘low ratings’ are all it’ll get if it keeps airing it along with other hits like Castle or HIMYM.
Although I watched SG-1 from the beginning (on Showtime!) I never really got into the show as much as some others (ST:TNG, Firefly/Buffy, BSG, etc) mainly b/c of Richard Dean Anderson (although I remember watching MacGuyver as a youngin’). Having said that, I really liked SG:U. I really was an obvious mix of BSG with SG but it was interesting and, eventually, felt like it was going someplace.
BTW if you’re interested in the future read anything by Cory Doctorow, or Iain Banks Culture stories. Different takes on the future but both interesting.
I’ve read several Doctorow books, I really like the author’s take on the future (The idea of biological technology and houses you can organically ‘grow’ blew my mind), but I’ll definitely check out Iain Banks
