The C&D has ceased for now, and peace has been restored. But those who sacrificed themselves for the victory may never return.
Exhausted, we gazed at the community we helped create and wondered why we chose to violate trademarks. Was there another way?
Standing on the cliff, the answers seemed to escape from us. We only knew that we’ll continue game development again, before we find the direction we’ll take.
How long will we keep on coding? How long will this migration last? Maybe only the Java Compiler in Eclipse knows for sure…
It’s been 12 days since the C&D caused us to Cease Development, so I decided it was about time we got into a bit of a progress report and an update on what to expect, as well as dates we can promise stuff (So that we may break said promises!).
During the first 6 days, we spent a while attempting to defend ourselves and trying to find a direction we would go. That direction ended up being K3RNEL.
K3RNEL was registered on April 6th, 2010. In less than 6 days, we’ve got the Arena Blog, Monsters Blog and this, the Hub.
We’ve also got some shiny forums where the Project’s Development will be coordinated. We’ve got a bunch of plugins on the forums too, such as a Spoiler tag, as well as RSS Feeds, quick reply and other fancy things.
For all the folks at home saying “Code or it didn’t happen”, We’ve released the “K3RNEL Monsters” Server Engine on github. We haven’t decided if github will or will not be the code’s final resting place, but we’ll use that for the time being.
The code’s trademark-free. We ended up refactoring the ShoddyBattle code into generic “Monster” classes, and had to sacrifice a game file or two (Such as the dpspecies.db). I can’t say we’ve tested the code, so proceed at your own risk.
The client code is a different monster we’ve got to face. For that, we’ll probably set up a temporary private server, while we commit replacement code and mostly temporary resources, so that both Client and Server can be trademark-free.
And if you’ve gotten this far, and are still wondering where that chunk of text from the top was from, look no further than Megaman X‘s ending screen. If you haven’t played Megaman X, you owe it to yourself to buy your preferred Megaman X Collection, and play it.
Did the C&D letter really cease??? Is Poke’net going to continue with the development of VV? Did I read this paragraph wrong or is Poke’net really going to restore to the way it was or close to the way it was.
By ‘ceased’, I mean they stopped the harassment.
We also stopped development of “PokeNet”.
Instead, we’ll be concentrating on bringing developers a brand new game engine, as well as TWO battle engines, one being turn-based, and one being real-time.
As for the community? We’ll give them not one, but TWO different games, hoping to cater to their tastes.
Rest assured, no trademarks will be violated on the creation of these games.
Progress is moving slowly but surely, nice work
Sweet can’t wait to help develop this game.
